Hello orchidlovers,
please allow us to introduce Bert van Zuylen. Bert is a 47 year old houseman, married, and father of a 12 year old son. He started growing orchids in 1989, and it didn't take him very long to find out that he could keep his books in a better shape as his plants. So he started to collect books on orchids. And magazines, catalogs, postcards, and much, much more. After some time someone asked him if he would like to buy a collection of books, and he did. A few books were already in his own private collection and Bert tried to sell them at the monthly meetings of the societies he'd joined. He sold all of them the first evening. Some time later another collection was offered, he bought it, and again he sold the books that already were in his collection.
Then somebody asked him if he could sell the complete collection of this orchid lover. Bert thought that would be fun, so he agreed. This was the start of a non-profit service for orchid lovers from The Netherlands and Belgium. People bring the books they want to sell to Bert, and he tries to sell them. Without any profit, commission or whatsoever. These people decide at what price the books are offered, Bert doesn't interfere!
To Bert it's a hobby, which also gives him first choice to buy a book from the books that are delivered at his place. So now he has some 1300 books in his own collection and a room full of books for sale. Bert, his wife Elly and their son Maarten take these books to several events like shows and meetings, and try to sell as much as they can.
Because he refuses to ask money for this service the Dutch Orchid Society (N.O.V.) allows him to list the books that he has for sale at this site. What started as a hobby is now really looking like a business, but it is really a lot of fun to him. But please keep in mind that he doesn't have a bookshop, so you can't pay with credit cards.
Every now and then Bert send e-mails to people all over the world to let them know he has some new arrivals.
